AB Word Family Worksheets & Printables

Teaching AB word family through printable worksheets can be a practical way to enhance students’ phonological awareness, decoding skills, blending, and segmentation abilities. These worksheets have fun activities that help students practice AB family words. This helps them understand how words are put together. With pictures and interactive tasks like recognizing words and filling in blanks, students can enjoy learning in an exciting way.

Introduce the AB family words, explaining that they share a common sound and pattern. Show examples like “cab,” “tab,” and “grab” to illustrate the concept.

Incorporate multisensory activities that direct students to blend and segment sounds to form AB family words. For example, students can use Elkonin boxes and word puzzles.
Orthographic mapping builds the ability to quickly decode words by identifying their sounds letter by letter and blending them to read the word. As a student’s orthographic mapping process becomes more efficient, she moves closer to achieving reading fluency.

Use short stories or sentences that include AB pattern words. Students can read and decode these stories, answer questions about the text, and reinforce their understanding of the word family.

Engage students in phonics games that involve words ending in AB. Games like bingo, word searches, word scrambles, or board games centred around word families can make learning fun.

The most common struggle with reading AB family words is weak letter-sound correspondence skills when students need help matching letters with the correct sounds. This can lead to difficulty memorizing words and storing them in long-term memory. Start with clip cards and let struggling students identify the middle sound or the rime. Then, move forward with blending onset and rime to sound out words.

Use individual printable for each word and focus on seven phonemic activities, allowing children to segment, read, spell, and write words ending AB.

Use the AB word family list to prepare these activities. Visual aids such as flashcards or posters can be added to these activities to provide an additional reference for children.

Oral Segmentation.
Onset/rime. Listen to this word: cab. Say the first sound in the word and then the rest of the word. /k/ … ab
Phoneme by phoneme. Listen to this word: cab. Say the word sound by sound. /k/ /a/ /b/

Phoneme manipulation.
Replace the first sound in the word cab with /l/. (lab)
Say cab without the /k/. (ab)

Phoneme categorization.
Which words have the same middle sound: cab, lab, cob? (cab and lab)
