Building Words – FL Blend Printables

Word-building activity helps children recognize word patterns and emphasize the components of the pattern. Through this hands-on approach, children develop a keen awareness of how different letters come together to form words, enhancing their overall literacy skills.

How to use this worksheet:
In this activity, children experiment with different letter combinations (middle and ending letter combinations) to create words that start with FL blend:
Step 1. Let the child look at the beginning letters FL. Explain that this letter combination is called a consonant blend. A blend is two consonants that come together and keep their sounds. The letters FL represent the /fl/ sounds.
Step 2. Let the child explore the vowel sounds in the provided box. Ask the child to choose one sound, read it, and then write it down. Let the child write the letter A, representing the sound /a/.
Step 3. Let the child explore the consonant (final) sounds in the provided box. Ask the child to add the final consonant sound to complete the word. Let the child write the letter T, representing the ending sound /t/. Ask the child to spell the word letter-by-letter: F-L-A-T. Ask the child to count how many letters are in the word FLAT (4).

FL blend words in this activity: flat, fly, float, flip, flock, flake, flap, flop, flick, flag.
This activity includes the following vowel sounds: short vowels and long vowels (digraphs, silent E). Choose the words based on your child’s phonics skills.

Printing options: black lines.
