Short A Word Ladder 1

Word ladders are great for building decoding, spelling, and vocabulary skills. Kids examine the sound-letter relationship when changing one or two letters to make a new word.

Look at the word at the bottom. Say the word sound by sound: /b//a//d/. Say the word as a whole. (bad) Look at the picture. Say the word. (sad) Which sound has changed? (first) Say this sound. (/s/) Color the dot under the picture. Write the letter that spells the sound /s/ to complete the word. Repeat all words. Optional, color the ladder and pictures.
