Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Name the word. Say the word ONE. Ask the child to repeat the word ONE.

Spell each sound. Point out that the word ONE has three graphemes.

Ask the child to trace the letters in the word ONE. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
