Decoding The Sight Word WELL

Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Page 1.
Name the word. Say the word WELL. Ask the child to repeat the word WELL.
Name the individual phonemes. Point out that the word WELL has three phonemes.
Spell each sound. Point out that the word WELL has four graphemes.

Page 2.
Ask the child to trace the letters in the word WELL. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
Ask the child to say the word WELL and place a chip in a box for each sound he hears. Ask him how many sounds he hears.
Ask the child to write the letters to make the word WELL. Ask the child how to spell the word WELL letter by letter.
