Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Name the word. Say the word YES. Ask the child to repeat the word YES.

Spell each sound. Point out that the word YES has three graphemes.

Ask the child to trace the letters in the word YES. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
