Elapsed Time Challenge: Adventure #19

This worksheet helps students grasp and solve elapsed time word problems. It provides a straightforward, step-by-step approach that makes it easier for students to calculate how long an activity takes by comparing start and end times. By using this and other resources focused on time word problems, students will practice reading clocks, using a number line to add time, and recording start and end times. The explicit and systematic instructions solidify the concept of elapsed time, helping students build confidence and improve their ability to tackle real-life time-related problems.

Read the problem. Have the child read the problem. It asks them to find out what time it will be after taking a walk that starts at 10:00 A.M. and lasts for 30 minutes. Their goal is to determine the end time of the walk.

Draw the start and end times. Have the child locate the clock on the left side of the worksheet and draw the start time of 10:00 A.M. on the clock. Next, have them think about the time that will pass—30 minutes. Then, have the child move to the clock on the right and add the 30 minutes to 10:00 A.M. Have them draw 10:30 A.M. as the end time.

Fill in the timeline. Have the child use the timeline in the middle of the worksheet to see how time progresses. Instruct them to write “Start time” and fill in 10:00 A.M. on the left. Then, have the child move along the timeline, adding the 30 minutes to get to 10:30 A.M.

Complete the T-Chart. Instruct the child to write “10:00 A.M.” in the left column for their start time. Then, have them write “+30 minutes” in the right column. Finally, have the child write 10:30 A.M., the end time of the walk.

The worksheet includes explicit instructions for solving math problems step-by-step, ensuring students grasp each concept clearly and build confidence.
