This UM word family mini-book helps children practice segmenting and blending onset and rime to build strong spelling skills.
How to use UM word family mini-book:
Cut the pages following the dotted line. Fold four sheets and staple them.
Step 1. Ask the child to read the rime … -um on the cover, then open the book.
Step 2. Ask the child to look at the picture and say the word aloud – GUM. Ask the child to read and trace the rime -um.
What letter spells the short vowel sound /u/? (u) Write the letter u.
What letter spells the sound /m/? (m) Write the letter m.
Step 3. Next, ask the child to say the first consonant sound (onset) in the word GUM and then the rest of the word.

Turn the page and move to the next word. Optional, ask the child to orally generate one sentence using the word GUM.
