Decoding The Sight Word START

Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Page 1.
Name the word. Say the word START. Ask the child to repeat the word START.
Name the individual phonemes. Point out that the word START has four phonemes.
Spell each sound. Point out that the word START has five graphemes.

Page 2.
Ask the child to trace the letters in the word START. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
Ask the child to say the word START and place a chip in a box for each sound he hears. Ask him how many sounds he hears.
Ask the child to write the letters to make the word START. Ask the child how to spell the word START letter by letter.
Optional: use a coding chart to mark spelling patterns.
