Decoding The Sight Word CLEAN

Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Page 1.
Name the word. Say the word CLEAN. Ask the child to repeat the word CLEAN.
Name the individual phonemes. Point out that the word CLEAN has four phonemes.
Spell each sound. Point out that the word CLEAN has five graphemes.

Ask the child to trace the letters in the word CLEAN. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
