Decoding The Sight Word OR

Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Page 1.
Name the word. Say the word OR. Ask the child to repeat the word OR.
Name the individual phonemes. Point out that the word OR has one phoneme.
Spell each sound. Point out that the word OR has two graphemes.

Page 2.
Ask the child to trace the letters in the word OR. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
Ask the child to say the word OR and place a chip in a box for each sound he hears. Ask him how many sounds he hears.
Ask the child to write the letters to make the word OR. Ask the child how to spell the word OR letter by letter.
