Decoding The Sight Word READ

Orthographic mapping involves the formation of letter-sound connections. It extracts the word’s spelling and stores it in long-term memory as a sight word.

Page 1.
Name the word. Say the word READ. Ask the child to repeat the word READ.
Name the individual phonemes. Point out that the word READ has three phonemes.
Spell each sound. Point out that the word READ has four graphemes.

Page 2.
Ask the child to trace the letters in the word READ. Ask him to use green for a predictable spelling pattern and red for an unusual one.
Ask the child to say the word READ and place a chip in a box for each sound he hears. Ask him how many sounds he hears.
Ask the child to write the letters to make the word READ. Ask the child how to spell the word READ letter by letter.
